Following is a nutshell definition of the Office of Educational Technology GoOpen Initiative, general student assessment, Journeys Map Program, and the synergy of simultaneous application.
Office of Educational Technology GoOpen Online Initiative. There are literally hundreds of references, those contained herein and others you will find when following searches on the subjects.
GoOpen: The package is a logical representation of past and current activities by school districts and teachers in the education world, to convert the historically static learning environment into a dynamic, open, interconnected digital learning experience for students and teachers.
GoOpen Viewed Correctly: Summarizes, orders, and explains how past and current activities, were and are accomplished, and offers documentation of those activities as a plan for use by school districts to follow. In other words, it is a lessons learned, purified, ordered and presented for your consideration.
GoOpen Focus: Conversion of existing courses, or creation of new courses for the interconnected digital learning environment, with a recommended sequence of activities. Activities start at the course level by teachers with subject matter knowledge, and work up the recommended sequence of activities and checklists, culminating with approval at the school district level. Existing and new courses are revised and created following individual state standards. These standards can identify by course subject and grade level, learning objectives to be taught and tested as learning outcomes.
Common Core: Many states include this requirement, which is the outcome of a multiple state effort to add, or include, the ability of students to “mentally simulate” application of the learning objectives in “practical and conceivable” scenarios presented to them, or as they may internally visualize. “Critical Thinking.”
1. GoOpen is a course by course effort which may at some time in the future lead to a sequence of activities that will include complete programs of study. At the K-12 level, however, that may be a long way off in the future. Currently, at the university level, this has been accomplished by MIT.
2. GoOpen is an expensive activity, in that when following the guidelines, it generates out-of-class efforts by teams of teachers. More hours to be compensated for.
3. The assumption is, that (a) courses, and (b) lesson plans which are the ordered sequence of learning objectives within a course, will (c) result is savings when applied across all schools in a district.
4. Outcome of these activities can be shared with other school districts, (a) culminating in standardization of teaching and learning, and (b) recovering expenses incurred.
5. Moving from the static classroom to the open interconnected digital classroom inserts the requirement to add and maintain technology and software that routinely require updating. That is to say, it adds the necessity of increased workload by supporting staffs, or creating new staff organizations.
General Student Assessment: Assessment objectives are designed to “Engage students with the right resources at the right time.”
Reflecting back to the GoOpen Notes, there is reference to learning objectives to be accomplished by students at (a) grade levels via (b) individual courses, and (c) lesson plans. Assessment programs are designed to allow teachers to create assessments via tests for individual student outcomes. Assessment tests identify learning completed successfully, and where additional learning is necessary to advance to the next level in the sequence of a subject.
Assessment Databases: Expertly designed by highly educated and experienced subject matter experts in the course of study at all levels.
Student Advising: Traditionally, advising students on individual courses to be completed in preparation for a professional degree has been difficult. Courses at one school may not meet the follow-on school learning objective requirements. New programs have been, or are in the stage of completion to resolve this issue. These new programs develop a map based on learning objectives for individual programs of study.
Journeys Map: A program mapping technology provided by Journeys Map of San Diego, California, is designed to assist in the advising function. This program adds a mapping and tracking display system, to the assessment approach. This provides students and advisers with a map of courses and learning objectives to be completed by the student on their journey to final degree completion.
Journeys Map: The map begins with the student identifying their final educational objective. From that point, Journeys Map creates a learning objectives map based on the degree-granting institution course and learning objective requirements. Students can change final objectives at any time and rerun the mapping system. This will provide a new map based on the new final degree destination.
Journeys Map is an excellent approach for students to complete educational objectives in minimal time at minimal cost. Frequently, while pursuing a career, student objectives change based on knowledge acquired, business and industry opportunities, work and intern experiences.
